Temporary Pause on F, M, and J Visa Interview Appointments

The U.S. Department of State has announced a temporary pause in the scheduling of new visa interviews for F (student), M (vocational), and J (exchange visitor) categories at U.S. embassies and consulates abroad. This pause applies only to new appointment requests. Interviews that were already scheduled are moving forward as planned, and applicants filing for a change of status within the United States are not affected.

This update is relevant to international students, vocational program participants, and individuals planning to enter the U.S. for educational or exchange programs under F, M, or J categories.

The pause is tied to the implementation of updated screening procedures, including enhanced social media vetting protocols. The Department has stated that this is a short-term measure, and that appointment availability is expected to resume once internal guidance is finalized.

What to Know:

• F, M, and J visa programs remain active. This is a pause in interview scheduling—not a program suspension or travel ban.
• J-1 visas are still being issued in limited scenarios, including to applicants with pre-existing appointments, Canadian citizens, and those applying from within the U.S.
• Applicants may continue preparing and submitting forms, including the DS-160, during this time.

We encourage those planning to begin programs later this summer or fall to continue preparing documentation as usual, as appointment availability may resume with limited notice.
